Gornto Spring is a magnitude 2 spring located on the west side of the Suwannee River in Dixie County, Florida. The spring has been used by the local residents as a swimming hole for decades. Dixie County owns and maintains a recreational park around the spring. The primary impact to water quality and quantity is the continued erosion of the banks causing an influx of sediment into the springhead as well as the spring run to the river.

Locklear & Associates prepared a grant application for funding from the Regional Initiative Valuing Environmental Resources (RIVER) Cooperative Funding Program to make improvements to the spring. The project includes the construction of approximately 300 feet of retaining wall, removal of sediment within the spring run, and removal of a man-made earthen dam and culvert.

The project will achieve multiple core mission values: water quality maintenance and improvement; erosion and sediment control; natural systems restoration and enhancement; and springs restoration and protection. The grant application prepared by Locklear & Associates was ranked #2 of 31 applications received by the Suwannee River Water Management District. The project received full funding and is currently underway with Locklear & Associates serving as the Engineer of Record
